Microsoft's new Vista operating system is becoming a bestseller, which is potentially bad news for internet rivals Google and Yahoo.

Vista was launched earlier this year amid much fanfare, but Google threw down a challenge to Microsoft with the launch of Google Apps, a suite of business software that will compete with the Vista-based office packages.

It also seemed that Microsoft had suffered a setback when users complained of recurring bugs in the Vista system, but new figures show that the company has shipped over 20 million copies in the first month, indicating that it is very popular so far.

The firm's previous operating system, XP, sold far fewer copies in its first weeks of release and the recent success shows "the broad interest in the security and usability enhancements" of the new version".

Vista will allow for better search functionality and is likely to drive forward internet advertising.

"We are encouraged to see such a positive consumer response to Windows Vista right out of the gate," said Microsoft's Bill Veghte.
