就跟当初SP1发布时一样，将SP2整合进系统并非一直是件轻松而愉快的事。事实上，在发放Vista SP2 Beta时，微软就曾警告用户不管是独立安装包还是通过Windows Update进行安装，都有可能会出现安装问题。这种情况也同样会出现在Windows Server 2008上。当在Vista或Server 2008上安装SP2失败时，系统会提示“Installation was not successful”的错误提示。
“当安装Vista SP1,Vista SP2 Beta或Windows Server 2008 SP2 Beta时，你可能会获取如下信息：Installation was not successful”微软透露称通过Windows Update进行更新也会有同样的问题。
此时，用户第一步需要做的就是通过独立安装包进行安装，因为这样可以排除是因为Windows Update错误而导致无法安装的情况。而如果安装仍然失败的话，微软提供了System Update Readiness Tool这个工具，32位和64位都可用，进行修复。该工具可以修复在Vista和Server 2008上的SP1安装问题。
同时，SP2 Beta也有着跟SP1类似的情况，此时，用户可以尝试重启系统，在系统启动后立即关闭所有杀毒软件，然后安装独立安装包。如果这样做仍然失败的话，只能卸载所有安全软件后再进行安装了。

In this context, the first step that needs to be taken when troubleshooting failed installations of SP2 Beta for Vista and Windows Server 2008 is to use the standalone package for the service pack. “One reason why you may want to use the stand-alone package for the service pack is that you can eliminate installation issues that may be related to Windows Update. This simplifies the troubleshooting process,” Microsoft added.
